Bacchus Cup Cheonwon Baduk Championship (1983-present)
Bacchus Cup Cheonwon Baduk Championship was launched in June 1983, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Dong-A Socio Group , to help develop the Baduk (Japanese go) circles and to promote the Baduk culture. It was launched under the name “Bacchus Cup Pro Baduk Championship,” with Maeil Business Newspaper as its host. Bacchus Cup Pro Baduk Championship was the first of its kind to be sponsored by a business, received strong favorable responses from 10 million Baduk fans nationwide, and came to an end with the holding of the final 12th championship. In 1996, the championship was relaunched with a new host, Sports Chosun, and the name was changed to Bacchus Cup Cheonwon Baduk Championship.
Marking the 18th championship this year, Bacchus Cup Cheonwon Baduk Championship holds finals in provinces, unlike other Baduk championships, which normally hold finals in Seoul.
in Bacchus Cup Cheonwon Baduk Championship, from the first to fourth championships, Baduk player Lee Chang-ho (level 9) swept the cups. From the fifth to tenth championships, however, young players such as Lee Se-dol, Park Young-hun, Song Tae-gon, Choi Chul-han, and Koh Kun-tae won the title, giving it a young image and making it a debut course for young Baduk players to enter the Baduk arena.
In Bacchus Cup Korea-China Baduk Championship, South Korean and Chinese players compete against each other. It is held yearly and alternately in South Korea and China. Last year, it was held in South Korea, and Chinese player Chen Yaoye (level 9) beat South Korean player Choi Chul-han (level 9) 2-0, becoming the champion.
Bacchus Cup Korea-China Baduk Championship strongly plants the image of Bacchus in the minds of the consumers in China, where Baduk is very popular.
